OBVERSE

Volodymyr the Great was the Grand Duke of Kiev (980-1015). During his reign, the rise of Kievan Rus as a strong community and great power began and all the East Slavic lands were united under Kievan rule. In 988-989, Russia was Christianized on his initiative.

By the end of the 10th century, the kyiv Detynets (citadel) wall system contained several gates. One gate was intended for passage to Podil, another – towards Pechersk, another was intended for passage towards St. Sophia Cathedral.
