The traditional wildebeest, kudu and springbok designs that have graced South Africa’s decimal coin designs for years had their last hurrah in 2022 and 2023 saw six new designs, the first year of the country’s 4th decimal series. These new designs are exquisite and continue the tradition of paying tribute to South Africa’s fabulous variety of flora, waterfowl and antelope. Issued in both English and Afrikaans, the new coins are:

5 Rand Coin, which originally featured a wildebeest, now shows a southern right whale.
2 Rand Coin now features a springbok antelope replacing the kudo, an antelope nearly four times the size of the elegant springbok.
1 Rand Coin saw the Protea Cynaroid flower replace the Springbok.
The 50 cent coin depicts a Grey Loerie bird in flight. Also known as the Grey Go-Away-Bird, it is the successor to the previous Crane Flower design.
The 20-cent coin replaces the cynaroid King Protea flower with an aloe-themed design.
The 10 cent coin now features a Cape bee replacing the Arum Lilly.
