Visible from afar, this steep and accident half-sphere rises above the Yosemite valley. Originally named "Tis-Sa-Ack", an Amerindian expression meaning "Fendé rock", it witnessed many famous ascents. The first known ascent was that of George Anderson in 1875, which pierced holes in smooth granite to succeed in conquering the rock wall. Since then, hikers have reached the top each year by following a path starting from the bottom of the valley. After a trying climb of several hundred granite steps, they find themselves at the foot of the East side, very steep. They overcome this ultimate difficulty using two steel cables attached to posts. Thanks to its particular shape, the HALF Dome is one of the most emblematic mountains in America.
