The "Darlehenskassenscheine" were banknotes issued between 1914 and 1922 by the Reichsschuldenverwaltung (Reich Debt Administration). They were used until the hyperinflation of 1923. These notes were not legal tender, but had to be accepted by all state treasuries. Their value was secured by loans on industrial and agricultural goods. Even without legal tender, the Darlehenskassenscheine were a de facto currency widely used as a parallel currency to the gold mark during the First World War and the early Weimar Republic.
